4.01K Race for Financial Fitness

In 2015, Jason Chepenik and Chepenik Financial hosted the very first 4.01k Race for Financial Fitness benefiting Junior Achievement with a very simple goal. They wanted to bring attention to the fact that too many kids are growing up without basic financial literacy. Many kids don’t know how to balance a checkbook, budget their money or understand the principles of saving and investing. Jason and his team realized that if they didn’t do something to solve this problem, they—and our communities—would be in big trouble! This is only compounding the growing retirement crisis in America. Americans are struggling with their personal finances and this adversely affects retirement plans. 52% of Americans have less than $10,000 saved for retirement.

In 2017, Bukaty Companies Financial Services decided to bring this 4.01K Race concept to Kansas City! We teamed up with the Junior Achievement of Greater Kansas City and began planning. We picked the race location in south Overland Park and had almost 600 runners/walkers sign up to participate. Through the work of many dedicated volunteers and  tremendous support from American Century Investments and our additional sponsors, we were able to pull off Kansas City’s first ever 4.01K Race for Financial Fitness.

Even with it being a chilly Saturday morning on April 1, 2017, the race netted $72,000 and proceeds were donated to the Junior Achievement of Greater Kansas City (JAGKC). Our local Junior Achievement shares our goal of making sure kids gain financial literacy skills so they cannot only prepare to be successful in their careers, but successful in life. JAGKC will be able to use these funds to achieve their company goal of educating and inspiring young people to value free enterprise and understand business and economics to own their economic future through educational programs in the classrooms (K-12).

We cannot thank our sponsors enough for supporting us during our first year! We want to give a huge thank you to our presenting sponsor American Century Investments.
